New York Public Library — Hollywood’s Favorite Book Set
With its marble steps, the lions Patience and Fortitude, and the cathedral-like Rose Main Reading Room, the New York Public Library (Stephen A. Schwarzman Building) has doubled for everything from a frozen apocalypse to Carrie Bradshaw’s wedding research.
The most famous library scenes
The Day After Tomorrow (2004) — the frozen library
A tidal wave floods Fifth Avenue and the survivors take refuge inside the library, burning books in the fireplace to stay alive. The exterior shots with the wave crashing are among the most iconic disaster-film images ever filmed in New York.
Ghostbusters (1984) — the library ghost
The opening library encounter sets the tone for Ghostbusters. The landmark exterior and the film’s interior imagery belong to the same story, but should not be mistaken for a ghost scene on the front steps.
John Wick 3 (2019) & Sex and the City
John Wick: Chapter 3 features a library confrontation, while Sex and the City connects the building with Carrie’s wedding plans. These are different screen stories, rather than a promise that every interior shown is accessible on a visit.
Spider-Man & Beyond
The lions have appeared in dozens of productions, from Spider-Man to Breakfast at Tiffany’s adjacent scenes on Fifth Avenue.
Where to stand to recreate the scenes
The Fifth Avenue facade and lion statues make a recognizable exterior photograph. Film interiors and visual effects do not necessarily reproduce the public rooms you can enter. Check NYPL visiting rules before planning an interior visit.
See it with AR — the smart-glasses tour
The library is part of our 14-stop NYC smart-glasses movie & TV history walking tour, after Bryant Park and before the walk toward the Chrysler Building and Grand Central. Your guide connects Ghostbusters and John Wick: Chapter 3 clips with the landmark, using your chosen viewing format. Interior access and precise visual alignment are not promised.
