Rockefeller Center — The Holiday Movie Capital of New York
From Kevin and his mother’s Home Alone 2 reunion to the 30 Rock studios where Saturday Night Live has aired for decades, Rockefeller Center is a landmark meeting point for cinema, television and the city itself.
The most famous Rockefeller Center scenes
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
Kevin and his mother reunite at Rockefeller Center. The plaza connects this familiar holiday-movie memory with the real city; seasonal decorations and views can differ from the film.
30 Rock & Saturday Night Live
The NBC Studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza have housed SNL since 1975, and the fictional “30 Rock” sitcom is named after the building. You can see the famous 30 Rock logo and the NBC entrance from the plaza.
Lunch Atop a Skyscraper (1932) — the photograph
The most famous construction photograph in history — eleven ironworkers eating lunch on a steel beam 850 feet up — was taken during the building of Rockefeller Center’s GE Building (30 Rock). The beam you see in the photo was part of this complex.
Radio City Music Hall & the Rockettes
The “Showplace of the Nation” next door has hosted the Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular since 1933, and has appeared in countless films and specials.
Where to stand to recreate the scenes
Stand at the top of the sunken plaza steps to recreate Kevin’s view of the rink, or on the ice rink viewing rail for the classic tree-and-Prometheus shot. For the Lunch Atop a Skyscraper reference, look up at 30 Rock’s upper floors from the plaza’s south end.
